Going to miss being surrounded by water when I leave Miami Beach and return to D.C.

Chances are if you’re a student wondering where you’re going to sleep at night, you may have a little bit of trouble paying attention in class. Miami-Dade County Public Schools count over 4,000 students who were homeless in the 2010-2011 school year from about 2,000 in 2006. Who do these numbers represent? We look at how homelessness affected the kids in one local family.

Over 300 daily newspapers nationwide have launched paywalls on their website and last week (april 9), the South Florida Sun Sentinel became the first daily in the region to do so. And other South Florida papers may soon follow suit.

Miami does have small towns … here’s Homestead.

One of the most controversial laws of the last decade, Arizona’s immigration law, was up for debate this week in the Supreme Court. As Tasnim Shamma reports, immigration activists and residents gathered in Homestead yesterday to applaud the federal government, but also to advocate for local control over the detention process.audio Listen now

At three residential dormitories of the Boca Raton campus of Florida Atlantic University, about 200 students returned home a few weeks ago to find mock eviction notices posted on their doors. The notice said students had three days to collect their belongings or be arrested.

Miami is where the magic was in 1959 — at least according to the newest show on the Starz network called Magic City. Network executives like the show so much, the show was renewed for a second season, even though it hasn’t officially aired (the first three episodes are available for streaming online). Magic City premieres Friday night at 10PM on Starz.

WLRN-Miami Herald News, the NPR member station in South Florida, is looking to hire three senior editors (news, enterprise and digital media).

Applications due April 30, 2012

Who will Mitt Romney choose as his running mate?
“The end is near for Rick Santorum. That doesn’t mean, though, that it’s time for Mitt Romney to start celebrating. Yes, Romney won Wisconsin Tuesday night, and has a near-lock on the eventual nomination. But claims that he is beginning to seal the deal with party conservatives are premature. A look at Wisconsin exit polls shows that he is still struggling among right-wing voters. That has clear implications for the type of general election campaign Romney can run—and the kind of vice-presidential candidate he’ll eventually have to pick.”

A photo from the rally for Trayvon Martin in Overtown (near downtown Miami) earlier today.
The event was held at Sherdavia Park at Northwest 62nd Street and 12th Avenue. The location was symbolic because it’s a park named after Sherdavia Jenkins, 9, who was killed by a stray bullet on July 1, 2006 while playing on her porch. Her father was in attendance at the rally.
